White Sox show depths of their despair with hilarious defensive blunder

Published on

“The White Sox have just gone full White Sox.”

The 2024 Chicago White Sox are one of the worst teams in baseball history. The South Siders were the first team mathematically eliminated from the playoffs back in the middle of August, and the only reason to monitor them in September is to see if they can eclipse the 1962 New York Mets for the fewest wins of the modern era. Chicago entered Tuesday night with 20 fewer wins than the next worst team in baseball, and somehow their season is still getting more embarrassing.

Eloy Jimenez was once believed to be part of a White Sox core that could contender for the pennant in the AL. That team blew up in spectacular fashion thanks mostly to impossibly cheap and lazy stewardship from Jerry Reinsdorf, but Jimenez’s inability to stay on the field didn’t help matters. Chicago traded Jimenez this season ahead of the deadline, and on Tuesday he came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs as a member of the Baltimore Orioles.

Jimenez hit a soft pop up that should have ended the inning … until the White Sox started White Soxing. This is what one of the worst teams in sports history looks like.

“The White Sox have just gone full White Sox,” said Baltimore announcer Kevin Brown. That’s a perfect description for a team that will look at the standings tomorrow and see itself at 31-109.

Somehow, the most depressing element of the White Sox’s season hasn’t even taken place yet. Because of MLB’s new tanking rules, the Sox can’t pick any higher than No. 10 in the 2025 MLB Draft. That’s a devastating blow for a team that badly needs young talent, especially in the batting order.

Jerry Reinsdorf has tanked two Chicago sports teams with his slumlord ownership. Chicago sports won’t know true peace until it has different owners for the White Sox and Bulls. For now, the Sox give us a new amazing blunder seemingly every night. This season really is the gift that keeps on giving.
