Wembanyama had a rare off-night when the Spurs took on the Charlotte Hornets on the road on Friday night, but he still does some amazing things even when he’s struggling. Early the third quarter, Charlotte forward DaQuan Jeffries went at Wemby and tried to toss a floater over him. That’s not gonna work against a guy with a literal 8-foot wingspan.
Wembanyama casually blocked Jeffries without leaving his feet. Hornets announcer Eric Collins — one of the best in the business — lost his mind at what he just saw. Only Wemby could pull this off. Watch the play here:
The Hornets beat the Spurs 117-116 when Fox’s game-winner was waived off because it came after the buzzer.
Wembanyama finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and five blocks, but he shot only 7-of-20 from the field and 1-of-9 from three-point range. Fox (22 points) and Stephon Castle (33 points) both looked great as San Antonio tries to establish a new identity post-trade deadline.
The Spurs aren’t there yet, but they will be soon. Those three-point attempts are going to pay off for Wembanyama in the long run even if they can be frustrating in the moment.
