Cowboys kicker nailed longest NFL field goal ever, but penalty waved it off

This was an NFL record that didn’t count.

Brandon Aubrey has one of the strongest legs in the NFL, and the Dallas Cowboys aren’t afraid to let him use it. Aubrey hit a 60-yard field goal against the Philadelphia Eagles last season, and then drilled a 66-yard kick in the NFL preseason a few weeks ago.

As they took on the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, the Cowboys decided to let Aubrey get another chance from 66 yards — which would tie Justin Tucker’s NFL record. Aubrey booted it through the uprights, but there was one problem: the Cowboys didn’t get the snap off in time, triggering a delay of game penalty and wiping out the kick.

Cowboys: snap the ball! What a way to lose a place in NFL history. Watch’s Aubrey’s record-tying field goal that wasn’t meant to be here:

Wow

Brandon Aubrey would have tied the NFL record for longest FG with this attempt… But there was a delay of game penalty.

Tucker’s NFL record from 66 yards bounced off the crossbar and in. Aubrey had the distance no problem. His preseason kick reportedly would have been good from 72 yards. There’s no doubt he has the leg to break the record one day.

Aubrey has an incredible story. He played college soccer at Notre Dame and was drafted into the MLS. He quit soccer for football in 2022, excelled in the USFL, and eventually earned a tryout with the Cowboys. In his debut last season, he was named an All-Pro and led the league in scoring.

Give Aubrey another chance at the record soon please, Cowboys. He’s ready to do this.
