The young driver found the barrier at Monza after a thunderous first lap

Andrea Kimi Antonelli made his long-anticipated debut for Mercedes on Friday at Monza, driving in George Russell’s place during the first practice session. His first lap was a thunderous effort, a lap on the soft compound around the “Temple of Speed” that put him atop the timing sheets for a brief moment, ahead of names like Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris.

His second lap was a different story.

Antonelli endured a high-speed spin off the track at Parabolica, careening into the barrier. The incident brought out the red flag, and ended his FP1 session minutes after it began:

Antonelli into the wall!

It’s a high-speed spin into the barrier at Parabolica for the youngster, who reports over the radio that he’s OK.

The red flags are out #F1 #ItalianGP pic.twitter.com/aQQQPqjaeb

— Formula 1 (@F1) August 30, 2024

The young driver immediately reported that he was okay over the radio. Antonelli also apologized to the team for the crash, drawing some words of comfort from Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff:

Kimi’s off at the Parabolica

Kimi: “Sorry!”
Toto: “All good, Kimi. All good.”

— Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team (@MercedesAMGF1) August 30, 2024

Now Mercedes faces the tall task of getting that car ready for Russell for the second practice session ahead of the Italian Grand Prix. Complicating matters for the team is the fact that Mercedes was running the new floor for the W15, installed at the Belgian Grand Prix, on the car Antonelli was driving. Lewis Hamilton was driving a car with the older floor, so Mercedes can compare data between the two.

Now that bit of data collection is out the window.

The circuit at Monza underwent several changes ahead of this year’s Italian Grand Prix, including a resurfacing of the track that drivers are grappling with as they get ready for Sunday’s main event.

Friday was indeed all part of the learning process for the young driver, who remains the favorite to slide into Hamilton’s seat for next season.

Caitlin Clark’s rookie season in the WNBA has exceeded expectations and seen her become of the top players in the league.

INDIANAPOLIS — Fever head coach Christie Sides had a goal in mind for Caitlin Clark heading into the Olympic break. While her point guard was doing so much to lead the Fever statistically, Sides wanted to empower her to become the team’s vocal leader as well.

To do so, she spent practices telling only Clark what she wanted communicated to the rest of the team, forcing the rookie to lead her teammates. Whether it was play calls during scrimmages or informing them of the next drill, it was Clark’s voice the team heard.

The results have been apparent since the restart. The Fever are one of the league’s hottest teams and Clark is at the center of their resurgence. While her efforts are certainly showing up in the box score — she’s averaging 22.6 points, 7.8 assists and 5.4 rebounds on 45.2% shooting since the league returned — they are also showing up in other ways, too.

Her teammate, Kelsey Mitchell, is playing about as well as anyone in the league right now. With her 23 points in Wednesday’s win over the Sun, she became the first player in franchise history with five straight 20-point games.

During that stretch, Clark has taken those lessons learned in practice and applied them to the court, calling plays on the fly to get Mitchell the ball when she gets on hot streaks. It’s what you’d expect of a veteran point guard, yes, but not necessarily from one in the third month of their professional career.

It’s a shining example of how Clark has zoomed right past the checkpoint of a good rookie season and is now a bonafide star. The so-called rookie wall that stops most first-year players by midseason appears to have been nothing more than a hurdle for Clark to leap over.

“I think that Olympic break really helped her out with that rookie wall, her getting that full week off and getting her legs under her,” Sides said before Wednesday’s win. “She just keeps growing and learning the game, her teammates, the style of play we’re trying to play. I love the fact that she’s a playmaker first. That’s where she is. I love that.”

The records are falling by the wayside nightly at this point, many of them having to do with that playmaking. But in the victory over the Sun, Clark also set the rookie 3-point record, going along with her rookie single-game 3-point record set earlier this season.

She also owns the rookie season assists record, as well as the outright single-game WNBA record for assists. If she continues her current pace of 8.1 assists per game, she will break the league’s single-season assists record in the final game of the regular season.

Record-breaking has become commonplace for Clark. It’s led to multiple accolades this season, the most recent seeing her named the first Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

Caitlin Clark is the @WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week!

she scored 20+ points in all three of our games

— Indiana Fever (@IndianaFever) August 27, 2024

“It’s definitely cool,” Clark said. “It’s definitely a hard award to win, especially in this league whether you’re in the Eastern Conference or the Western Conference…I think, for myself, coming out of the break and really playing aggressive, good basketball is something that I’m proud of and I feel like, as a team, we’ve done that, too.

“I felt I could gain some confidence even going into the break and just being able to carry that once we started playing again. I think I’ve been able to stack some games together,” Clark continued. “Just continuing to find more consistency has been my biggest goal and I think I’ve done a good job of that.”

The Fever’s rise out of the basement of the league and into the thick of the playoffs was not something Clark did on her own. Both Mitchell and Aliyah Boston have won Player of the Week honors this season, too.

But Clark has been the straw stirring the drink throughout. Since the 2-9 start, she’s averaging 19.3 points, 9.1 assists and 6.1 rebounds. That ranks her 10th in the WNBA in points and first in assists.

In that same span, the Fever have the highest offensive rating in the league and only the Liberty and Lynx — two of the top three teams in the league — have better records than Indiana. After being fed to the proverbial wolves to open the year, Clark and the Fever have come out the other side not just better, but one of the best in the league.

The debate is no longer whether Clark is the Rookie of the Year, but instead whether Clark could play her way onto the All-WNBA First Team by season’s end. Few players in the league have the offensive responsibility Clark has this season with the Fever.

Clark currently sits 11th in the league in scoring. However, none of the 10 players above her average even six assists per game, let alone the over eight Clark dishes out per contest. Over the last two months, she is averaging 20.8 points (fifth in the league) and 10.5 assists (first).

And the debate as to whether the Fever will make the postseason for the first time since 2016 has slowly become a debate about how high up the standings the team will finish as the wins keep piling up.

Clark has transformed the Fever franchise and the league as a whole. She’s become one of the faces of the WNBA just 30 games into her career, and it’s no longer just about her popularity or about her being one of the next ones up.

She’s already here.

Friday’s WNBA slate includes four games, headlined by a match-up between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky with major playoff implications.

Friday evening marks another busy day of WNBA game play, as the regular season enters its last few weeks. Thursday was a rare game-less day for the league, but 8 teams are back in action today.

Here’s what’s coming up:

The Indiana Fever (15-16) vs the Chicago Sky (11-19) at 7:30pm ET

The Fever are riding high off a Wednesday night win over the Sun, and will look to continue their strong post-Olympic play against the Sky. Caitlin Clark and the Fever are 2-1 against the Sky this season, but Chicago has lost 7 of their last 9 games, and have struggled since trading sharpshooter Marina Mabrey.

Containing Kelsey Mitchell will be key for Chicago — Mitchell has scored 20+ points in five consecutive games, the longest streak in franchise history. For the Sky, Angel Reese has been a bright spot. Chennedy Carter missed last game with an illness, but assuming she’s back in the lineup, Chicago’s offense should look better.

The Minnesota Lynx (23-8) vs the Dallas Wings (8-22) at 7:30PM ET

The Lynx have been the league’s best team since the break — they’ve won 7 consecutive games and now have the #2 seed, sitting just 2.5 games behind the Liberty for the best record in the league.

Dallas is coming off two consecutive victories — over the Sparks and the Aces — and while they’re likely out of playoff contention, they’ve looked like a different team with Satou Sabally back in the lineup. It will take a solid 40-minute performance for Dallas to slow down Minnesota.

We’ll see if they can get it done — with Napheesa Collier playing at an MVP level, no one’s beaten the Lynx since July 14th.

The Atlanta Dream (10-20) vs the Las Vegas Aces (18-12) at 10pm ET

The Dream are just a game behind the Sky for the final playoff spot, but they’ve dropped three straight games. The Sky have been in free-fall — losers of 7 of their last 9 games — but the Dream haven’t been able to take advantage their struggles and grab the #8 seed.

Meanwhile, the Aces will look to bounce back from a loss against the Wings on Tuesday night. A’ja Wilson has been playing out of her mind — she exploded for 42 points against Dallas — but the Aces rebounding and defense haven’t resembled those of last year’s title team.

The New York Liberty (26-6) vs the Seattle Storm (19-11) at 10pm ET

The Liberty will travel to Seattle and hope to respond to an uncharacteristic loss against the Los Angeles Sparks. The Liberty was without Jonquel Jones in that one, who was out sick, but should be back at full strength today presuming Jones has made a recovery.

Meanwhile, Seattle pulled out a close win over the Dream thanks to a go-ahead three-pointer by Jewell Loyd. Seattle has been inconsistent this season, but has enough talent to become a contender if all the pieces come together. If the standings hold, this game could be a preview of the WNBA Semi-Finals.

Updated WNBA Standings

New York Liberty (26-6)
Minnesota Lynx (23-8)
Connecticut Sun (22-8)
Seattle Storm (19-11)
Las Vegas Aces (18-12)
Phoenix Mercury (16-16)
Indiana Fever (15-16)
Chicago Sky (11-19)
Atlanta Dream (10-20)
Washington Mystics (9-22)
Dallas Wings (8-22)
Los Angeles Sparks (7-24)

How did all of the top 2024 NFL rookie QBs perform this preseason?

Past performance is not indicative of future results.

That bit of wisdom applies to rookie quarterbacks in their first preseasons as they work to get the hang of the NFL and its faster, more complex defenses, bigger playbooks, and new targets and blockers.

For a lot of rookie signal-callers, their first reps in the NFL – even against preseason defenses filled with more rudimentary concepts and lesser players – can be like trying to jump on a bullet train at full speed.

Based on the tape, here’s how the top seven drafted quarterbacks in the 2024 selection process fared in their first go-rounds at the (nearly) highest level of competition.

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

What he did: In two preseason games, Williams completed 10 of 20 passes for 170 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 79.2. He ran twice for 20 yards and a touchdown.

What went well: When throwing out of boot and throwing passes outside of structure, WIlilams was absolutely incendiary at times. His ability to maintain his mechanics when on the move showed up in more than one highlight play, and never so much as on this ridiculous 45-yard completion to Rome Odunze against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2. There are a handful of veteran NFL quarterbacks who can make precision throws like this downfield against one’s own physical momentum.

uh huh pic.twitter.com/tvpwCMD6NB

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 18, 2024

What needs work: Williams completed just one of five passes when under pressure, and as cool as the off-script stuff was, he got a bit frenetic when pressured if he didn’t see the superhero play. Williams’ passer rating dropped from 130.1 to 81.3 with USC last season, so this bears watching. He’ll need to advance his pocket-movement skills to make hay in the NFL.

Williams has every tool required to break the Bears’ 75-year quarterback curse. And once he slows his process down a bit when there’s bodies around him, that will be the most important addition to his bag.

Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders

What he did: In two preseason games, Daniels completed 12 of 15 passes for 123 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 100.8. He ran the ball three times for 16 yards and a touchdown.

What went well: Daniels started his first NFL preseason against the New York Jets by overshooting a screen pass to running back Austin Ekeler. Then, his second professional pass showed us that Daniels is still the best boundary and fade thrower in this draft class. He hit receiver Dyami Brown on a beautiful go ball out of four verts against the Jets’ spinning Cover-1. Just 42 yards later, the Commanders had seen all they needed to see.

Jayden Daniels launches it DEEP on his second throw

: Stream #WASvsNYJ on #NFLPlus pic.twitter.com/tGSoMxc4gI

— NFL (@NFL) August 10, 2024

At the end of that first drive, Daniels ran for a 3-yard touchdown out of a zone read. That was pretty much case closed as far as what Daniels needed to show anybody.

What needs work: Daniels had a couple of throws he’d like back where his ball location wasn’t where it should have been. This was especially true on this moonball to receiver Terry McLaurin against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2. As Daniels torched the NCAA last season on these kinds of backside fade balls, we’ll chalk this up to rookie yips.

juuuuuuust a bit outside pic.twitter.com/zcfRKFRXxh

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 28, 2024

Overall, when he stayed within himself, Daniels was the guy the Commanders wanted with the second overall pick. He ran the offense with confidence, showed both touch and velocity on his passes, and proved to be a threat in the run game.

Drake Maye, New England Patriots

What he did: In three preseason games, Maye completed 24 of 31 passes for 192 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 86.9. He ran seven times for 32 yards, one touchdown… and three fumbles.

What went well: Perhaps most importantly, Maye survived his own offensive line, and that was most difficult in New England’s preseason finale against the Commanders. All three of his fumbles had bad center exchanges at their roots, and Maye was pressured on 34.2% of his dropbacks. Maye was especially under siege in that Commanders game, and the extent to which he was able to move in the pocket and mitigate all that pressure with big-time throws was singularly impressive. One of those bad snaps put the Patriots at their own 4-yard line, and Maye responded brilliantly with what turned out to be a 101-yard drive, if you throw in the one of many penalties from New England’s offensive line.

And this 29-yard pass to fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk was everything you want your rookie quarterback to see and respond to.

Drake Maye, baby. This pocket movement throw to Ja’Lynn Polk to the middle of levels was a professional football throw. Someone give this man a functional offensive line. pic.twitter.com/qEkEmZZsW0

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 27, 2024

What needs work: Maye had a weird tendency to sail intermediate throws at North Carolina, and that rogue thing has extended itself into the NFL. I’m not sure where this comes from, but there are still too many pop-offs that should be easy completions.

Drake Maye had this odd tendency to sail easy intermediate passes at North Carolina.

That issue has not solved itself just yet. pic.twitter.com/WU8nq0n0fC

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 27, 2024

Maye was probably the toolsiest quarterback in this class; the question was whether he could iron out the rough spots to make himself NFL-conversant as soon as possible. The improvement in pocket movement is very nice. Jacoby Brissett was named the Patriots’ starter so Maye has time to develop, and if he is able to reduce those odd easy throw issues – and survive his front five – he should be good for a ton of explosive plays through the air and on the ground.

Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons

What he did: In two preseason games before the Falcons shut him down for whatever unknown reason, Penix completed nine of 16 passes for 104 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 76.0. He had no rushing attempts.

What went well: The Falcons were clear in their intent to have Penix go through his progressions in the one game he actually played, and at times, he was all over that in a positive sense. His 16-yard pass to fellow rookie Casey Washington against the Dolphins had Penix looking to his right at first, finding the coverage unfavorable to that side, and then hitting Washington on the backside dig with a flat-footed throw that showed some of Penix’s velocity.

Working through problems and knowing the next answer(s). Great example from Michael Penix Jr.

Wanted to throw the in-route, but the pass off by the LB surprised him. Progresses through to the back side dig. pic.twitter.com/pEwqVLsNYY

— Jordan Reid (@Jordan_Reid) August 11, 2024

What needs work: Penix was the NCAA’s most prolific deep passer last season (117 attempts of 20 or more air yards for the Washington Huskies last season, which was 20 more than any other college quarterback), so it was quite odd to see so many incompletions on deep passes, especially to the sideline. Casey Washington would have had a Day For the Ages against the Dolphins if half of these passes were remotely in Washington’s vicinity.

Michael Penix Jr. threw seven incompletions against the Dolphins — five were misses to Casey Washington to the boundaries. Penix usually has great touch out there, and Washington was a fine fade/corner receiver at Illinois.

They’ll get it timed up. pic.twitter.com/TAGz5pTsjk

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 10, 2024

Penix’s numbers when pressured and blitzed (which raised concerns among those who studied his college tape) were suboptimal – he was one of three for nine yards when pressured and three of seven for 48 yards when blitzed – makes one wonder, again, why Penix wasn’t given more time in the preseason to work out the bugs. We can but wait and see what it all means once the regular season rolls around, and whether Kirk Cousins is 100% ready to go after last season’s torn Achilles tendon.

J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings

What he did: In one preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, McCarthy completed 11 of 17 passes for 118 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 116.8. He had no rushing attempts. He also suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee, which will end his 2024 season before it could officially begin. Ugh.

What went well: McCarthy completed just 25 of 46 passes over 20 air yards for Michigan last season, so it was a bit surprising to see him successfully hurling the ball all over the field for the Vikings when he did. McCarthy was accurate deep to all levels of the field, and in conjunction with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s brilliant passing game designs, it really showed up.

Kevin O’Connell is one of the NFL’s best passing game designers. He helped J.J. McCarthy on two of his explosive completions with mirrored vertical routes against single-high coverage. Let your QB pick a side. pic.twitter.com/9d8AZP6Ewb

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 14, 2024

What went wrong: Well, besides the season-ending injury (How was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?), McCarthy did get a bit loose with his mechanics at times, and that led to some less-than-optimal throws. That included the interception he threw to Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jack Jones.

Jack Jones of the @Raiders giving J.J. McCarthy of the @Vikings his “Welcome to the NFL” moment. After the Patriots waived him and Las Vegas picked him up last November, Jones became a true lockdown cornerback. Seems it’s sticking. pic.twitter.com/JBTX1qBMr8

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 11, 2024

It’s obviously a shame that McCarthy’s rookie season will be a wash, but there’s a lot to work with here. As McCarthy recovers from the injury, he’ll be able to take the gap year to refine what needs refining. Overall, I’d say that McCarthy was a pleasant surprise with the reps he was able to take.

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

What he did: In two preseason games, Nix completed 23 of 30 passes for 211 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 117.5. He also ran the ball six times for 29 yards.

What went well: Nix’s 23-yard completion to Cameron Sutton against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 of the preseason said a lot about why he’ll work well in Sean Payton’s offense. Nix had a drag/stop route over the middle and two vertical routes to his front side. He looked the Cover-3 safety to the middle of the field where receiver Tim Patrick was headed, and then turned to hit Sutton nearer to the numbers.

Bo Nix, reading through the script. pic.twitter.com/xCrNe5OIoJ

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 28, 2024

What needs work: Sean Payton doesn’t want his quarterbacks wasting opportunities from the pocket; one of many reasons he was so frustrated with Russell Wilson last season. Nix did have a tendency to throw wild passes from the pocket when pressure was converging – this cemetery ball to tight end Greg Dulcich was one example.

right in the ol’ lumberyard; ouch pic.twitter.com/uoyLD8BwLk

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 28, 2024

Overall, Nix acquitted himself as expected in his first preseason. He’s more of a Payton quarterback than Russell Wilson was ever going to be – a very football-conversant player who will learn the structure of Payton’s offense and spit it back over and over on the field.

Spencer Rattler, New Orleans Saints

What he did: In three preseason games, Rattler completed 20 of 38 passes for 202 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 76.9. He also ran the ball seven times for 26 yards and another touchdown.

What went well: Selected with the 151st overall pick in the fifth round, Rattler had more than enough first-round tape from his South Carolina days – especially considering the fact that he was working behind what may have been the NCAA’s worst offensive line. It didn’t take long for semi-astute observers to note that Rattler had enough on the ball to perhaps compete with Derek Carr for the starting job. Rattler’s arm talent, as well as his ability to throw on the move and navigate pressure, were NFL-ready more often than not this preseason.

yet another dime from spencer rattler pic.twitter.com/lIap4hbY5F

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 28, 2024

What needs work: Like a lot of quarterbacks who are used to porous offensive lines (and it appears that he’ll have more of that with the Saints this season), Rattler can get… well, rattled at times when things start to collapse. He needs to work a bit on staying within himself and the structure of the play for that split second longer in the pocket so he can take advantage of the reads and routes that are available.

dagnabit pic.twitter.com/gmeHPcPqPT

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) August 28, 2024

Overall, Rattler did a lot to prove that the NFL underestimated him throughout the draft process. It remains to be seen whether he’ll get a legitimate shot to usurp Carr as the Saints’ starting quarterback. But if head coach Dennis Allen and his staff are tired of the same old, same old from Carr as the season progresses… well, don’t be surprised if something happens.

Scottie Scheffler dominated Thursday at the Tour Championship. He signed for a 6-under 65 to move to 16-under overall. The former Texas Longhorn started the day with a two-stroke lead and finished with a seven-shot advantage.

On Thursday, 11 scores of 67 or lower were recorded, which is shocking given how firm the revitalized East Lake Golf Club played.

It was a solid first day of the FedEx Cup finale, so let’s look at Round 2’s tee times.

College football is BACK, and yes this play resulted in an interception

College football is back friends, and back in a big way.

Colorado is hosting North Dakota State to open their 2024 schedule, and both Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter Jr. — a pair of potential first-round selections next spring — are putting on a show early in that game.

But it was the Bison who might have given us the most incredible interception of the season, even though we are just in Week 1.

Colorado received the second-half kickoff and while they were trailing 20-17 to open the third quarter, they immediately drove deep into North Dakota State territory, thanks to this long completion from Sanders to Hunter:

The ball skills are solid, but that’s OPI, Travis Hunter pic.twitter.com/IQCSrDOJJH

— Cam Mellor (@CamMellor) August 30, 2024

As noted on the broadcast Hunter might have gotten away with a little … let’s just say creative use of his left arm, but the completion stood and the Buffaloes were deep in Bison territory.

However, they were turned away, on an interception you do not exactly see every day:

With Colorado facing 3rd and goal Sanders looked to the three-receiver side of the formation, throwing to the left on a quick route concept. But the pass deflected off the leg of a North Dakota State defender — who was lying on their stomach into the end zone — and into the waiting arms of Bison linebacker Nick Kubitz.

Here is another look at the play:

Colorado managed to get a stop on their next possession, and Sanders and Hunter combined for their second touchdown connection of the game on their ensuing drive to take a 24-20 lead.

But you might not see a crazier interception this season.

Travis Hunter didn’t waste any time to make his case as the best player in college football. The Colorado junior put on a show in the season opener against North Dakota State, flexing his game-breaking talent as both a wide receiver and cornerback. It’s hard to imagine a more impressive Week 1 performance for the two-way threat.

As a wide receiver, Hunter caught three touchdown passes from QB Shedeur Sanders. His third touchdown was art. On third-and-goal, Sanders found Hunter on a fade route, and he somehow caught the ball and stuck the landing despite being absolutely blanketed by the defensive back. If Hunter wins the Heisman this season, this highlight is immediately going to the front of the reel.

The alternate view is even better.

— Billy M (@BillyM_91) August 30, 2024

This would be a wild touchdown grab for any wide receiver, but of course Hunter isn’t just a star wide receiver. He’s purported to be even more impressive as a defensive back, and in this game he played basically every snap on both sides of the ball. We’ve seen two-way stars before in college football — Charles Woodson and Champ Bailey come to mind — but it’s possible we’ve never seen someone so dominant on both ends like Hunter is.

Hunter’s ability to rack up yards after the catch is so fun to watch. This is art:

Travis Hunter has never played a game where he wasn’t the best athlete on the field. The scary part is I’m not sure he will at the next level either. pic.twitter.com/prezWvaByO

The Buffaloes are a polarizing bunch under Deion, but everyone can agree to that Travis Hunter is awesome.

Scottie Scheffler looked unstoppable on day one of the Tour Championship, leading Xander Schauffele to offer a witty recap.

ATLANTA — Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler have played a lot of golf together in 2024, so much so that they have joked about how they don’t have much to say to each other anymore.

And yet, Schauffele has plenty to talk about after Thursday’s round. He had a front-row seat for Scheffler’s masterful 6-under 65, the lowest round of the day at the Tour Championship that has given the World No. 1 a record lead.

“Scottie was almost in every fairway it looked like,” Schauffele said cheekily.

“It looked like he was going through wedge practice while he was out there. If you’re in the fairway, you can attack this golf course.”

Indeed, Scheffler missed only four fairways on Thursday, giving himself plenty of opportunities. After bogeying the first hole, where he missed the fairway way right, Scheffler played East Lake in 7-under par. He made seven birdies and 10 pars and now holds a commanding seven-shot lead over Schauffele and Collin Morikawa.

Schauffele, meanwhile, tied Scheffler right out of the gate. He birdied the opening hole, jumping up to 9-under and into a share of the lead. Scheffler began the Tour Championship at 10-under via the starting strokes format, while Schauffele teed off at 8-under.

But much unlike Scheffler, Schauffele cooled off the rest of the way. He made only two birdies, on the par-5 6th and par-5 14th, and then countered those with two dropped shots on the par-3 11th and par-4 16th.

“Started off hitting it okay,” Schauffele said of his 1-under 70.

“Yeah, I probably just reverted a little bit, unfortunately. I’m going to go hit some balls right now with the setting sun here, but I’ll figure it out.”

Schauffele only found seven fairways, yet he did manage to hit 13 greens.

“I hit it in the rough a lot, and with brand new greens, I think I scored okay for how bad I hit it,” Schauffele added.

“But yeah, overall, it was kind of a meh day. Wasn’t something for proud of or disgusted by.”

He still has three days to overcome a seven-shot deficit, but it won’t be easy. That said, Schauffele has a terrific record at East Lake, so anything is possible.

Rahm sets the record straight about any false claims on the negative rumors about LIV Golf and his decision to join the league.

Jon Rahm cleared the air on the many claims regarding him and LIV Golf.

It was a shock when Rahm left the PGA Tour for LIV last December. He was adamantly against the rival league. However, the 2023 Masters Champion changed his mind and started his team, Legion XIII.

The latest rumors suggest that he had “deep regret” joining the Saudi-backed league, but Rahm ended the noise, per a report from the New York Post.

“There’s zero validity to what any of that said. I don’t know where it came from,” Rahm said to the New York Post.

“I don’t know why they need to say that some of us are unhappy when we’re not. It’s one of the things that frustrates me a little bit, the fact that they can claim that there’s a source and there’s zero truth to it.”

Rahm did not have a great start to the 2024 major championship season. He struggled at the Masters and finished T-45, and the Spaniard missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Rahm also withdrew from the U.S. Open due to a foot injury.

However, he recorded seven top 10s in a row to start the LIV Golf season. He did not win right away, but Rahm eventually got over the hump and took home the LIV United Kingdom title.

He is currently No. 1 in the individual race for LIV Golf and finished inside the Top 10 at the Open Championship.

Rahm said he is comfortable and pleased with his decision.

“I’m very, very eager for the future of my team and the league,” Rahm said. “I get to be a part of something very different to what we had in the past. I always enjoyed being part of a team and to be in charge of one now is something incredible.”

His Legion XIII team sits at No. 2 in the team standings with four wins. The future seems bright for Rahm and his team, as they are already making waves in Year 1 of their squad.

LIV Golf’s team championship event is in Dallas Sept. 20-22 at Maridoe Golf Club. However, Rahm will try to take home the individual title first with a hefty $18 million bonus. The individual title event is at LIV Chicago Sept. 13-15 at Bolingbrook Golf Club.

Collin Morikawa turned in a masterful back-nine, as he carded one of the low rounds of the day at East Lake.

ATLANTA — The only thing hotter than the 95-degree heat that scorched East Lake on Thursday was Collin Morikawa on the back nine.

He made six straight birdies, pouring in par-breakers on holes 10 through 15, soaring up the leaderboard and into contention. In doing so, Morikawa matched his own personal PGA Tour record. He last made six consecutive birdies during the first round of The Sentry, which, funny enough, also came on holes 10 through 15 at Kapalua. But he unfortunately blew a massive 54-hole lead that week, losing to Jon Rahm by a pair.

Nevertheless, Morikawa began the Tour Championship at 4-under par via the starting strokes format and now sits at 9-under after day one. He shot a 5-under 66 and is now tied for second with Xander Schauffele.

“After [the front] nine, I told myself to start only thinking about my shot and not worrying about if the ball is going to be perfect or not,” Morikawa said.

“We executed some shots and made some putts. Look, the game is good enough to come out here and win. I’ve just got to get out of my own head.”

Morikawa went on to explain how he has had to fight his own personal battles and strive for golfing perfection more than anyone else.

“I want to see the perfect shot. I want to see this high, peely cut that I’ve always hit. You work so hard on the range and the weeks before to hit that shot, and sometimes it doesn’t produce that,” Morikawa explained.

Collin Morikawa hits his tee shot on the 15th hole on Thursday.

“But it doesn’t mean that you have to play golf like that. At the end of the day, it’s like I’m trying to hit it 150 yards. I just want it to land 150 yards and figure it out from there. It’s knowing what to accept and what not to accept out there.”

With that said, Morikawa had plenty of good shots to accept, especially on the back nine. But he did get off to a lackluster start, opening with a 1-over 37 on East Lake’s front side.

“I wish [my run] would have started on hole 1, but it’s going to be a good reminder going into the next three days that I’ve just got to see my shot and execute,” Morikawa said.

“Not that I’m trying to do too much, but there’s this nice flow and rhythm in your routine sometimes when you’re playing well, and how do you find that. Sometimes it’s just barely off, but it causes some bad shots.”

Morikawa did not hit many bad shots on Thursday, at least not on the back-nine. He did miss a good look for birdie on the par-5 18th, but other than that, he played flawless golf down the stretch.

But now he faces a seven-shot deficit to World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who fired a 6-under 65 on day one. And yet, it’s only the first day plenty of golf remains. With his improved mindset, in which he focuses on the results and not the process, anything is possible for Morikawa. He has proven that before and most certainly can do so again this weekend.
