It’s time for Super Bowl squares results. We’ve got the first quarter numbers for Super Bowl 59.
The Philadelphia Eagles head into the locker room with a 24-0 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs at halftime of Super Bowl 59. If you had the square with Eagles 4 and Chiefs 0 in your Super Bowl squares contest, you cashed in for the second quarter.
The second quarter opened with the Eagles driving, but the Chiefs prevented a score when they picked off Jalen Hurts on an underthrown pass. That was the highlight of the quarter for the Chiefs. They went three and out on the next drive and then things really went south. Philly drove into field goal range and took a 10-0 lead. They followed that up with a backbreaker as Cooper DeJean picked off Patrick Mahomes and ran it back 38 yards for a pick-six to give the Eagles a 17-0 lead.
It looked like the Chiefs might have a chance to get some points on the board to close out the second quarter, but Patrick Mahomes threw a second interception. Zack Baun picked him off and Jalen Hurts subsequently found A.J. Brown for a 12-yard touchdown pass. It’s safe to say the first half was a disaster for the Chiefs.
Historically, 0 and 3 has been the most common combination of numbers at the end of the second quarter. Looking at the last two Super Bowls, which involved the Chiefs, last year saw the 49ers leading 10-3 (so 0 for 49ers and 3 for Chiefs). The year prior, the Eagles led 24-14 (so 4 for each team).
