Phillies OF Nick Castellanos caught asking for ‘respect’ on hot mic
After a trip across the pond for a two-game stint against the New York Mets in London — where the Phillie Phanatic put on a show and the Mets won the second game in dramatic fashion — the Philadelphia Phillies are back in the United States. Philadelphia is in Boston, and set for the rubber match of a three-game series against the Red Sox. While the Phillies won the first game, they dropped the second on Wednesday night.
And it was not without a little controversy.
Nick Castellanos was digging in to lead off in the top of the seventh inning, with the Phillies trailing Boston 8-4. But before a pitch was thrown, the Philadelphia outfielder was down in the count 0-1.
Due to an apparent pitch clock violation called by home plate umpire Derek Thomas.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Castellanos was not too thrilled with the call, and he let Thomas know it:
n case you could not hear what the microphone picked up, Castellanos had a … let’s say request for Thomas: “Out of respect for somebody who’s been in the league over ten years, you gotta [bleeping] speak up brother.”
Under the pitch clock rules, batters must be in the batter’s box and “alert to the pitcher” by the eight-second mark on the timer, or be hit with an automatic strike.
Thomas, however, let Castellanos have his say, and continued on without firing back, or tossing the outfielder. Castellanos, who tripled earlier in the game, grounded out on the next pitch.
