Bills players Shaq Lawson and Jordan Phillips allege ‘life-threatening’ comments from fan led to confrontation
Sunday afternoon’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Buffalo Bills was perhaps the most thrilling of the afternoon slate, as the game advanced to overtime following a 59-yard game-tying field goal from Eagles kicker Jake Elliott. The home team then won in overtime, on a walk-off touchdown run from Jalen Hurts.
In the wake of that game, some emotions spilled over on the Bills’ sideline between some Buffalo players, and a fan.
Video surfaced Sunday night of defensive tackle Jordan Phillips walking towards the stands, and getting face-to-face with a fan. Shaq Lawson, Ed Oliver, and Greg Rousseau can then be seen joining Phillips:
As you can see, at one point it appears Lawson shoved one of the fans right behind the Bills’ sideline.
Now both Lawson and Phillips are opening up about what led to the confrontation. In their words, the fan involved made “life-threatening” comments ahead of the game, comments which continued throughout the contest.
“I love the crowd, I love rowdy fans, it makes the game fun,” Phillips posted on Instagram Monday. “But one thing I’m not going to tolerate is someone threatening me or my family. This is a line that shouldn’t be crossed:”
Lawson apologized for his behavior, but backed up Phillips’ view.
“We asked Philadelphia security to remove the fan, but he was allowed to stay for the entire game. Eventually, our emotions boiled over, and I made a mistake,” Lawson posted in part on social media. “For that, I apologize, but there are certain lines that should not be crossed:”
Bills head coach Sean McDermott indicated that he was made aware of the incident on Monday.
“What I’m aware of is that people were asked to have the fan removed, and nothing was done,” McDermott said. “At the end of the day, that’s not for us to concern ourselves with at this point, and it’s just unfortunate overall that that would be taking place during a game.”
The Bills also stated that the team will look into the situation.
