Bob Myers’ position with NFL’s Washington Commanders, explained

Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

The former Golden State Warriors architect will be part of reshaping the Washington Commanders’ future in the NFL.

Bob Myers was the architect of four NBA championship teams with the Golden State Warriors. After stepping down from his position with the Warriors in May of 2023, the esteemed executive has landed a surprising gig in a new league.

The Washington Commanders have hired Myers as part of an advisory committee to lead the team through several key offseason decisions, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Adrian Wojnarowski. Former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman will also be part of the advisory committee.

The Commanders fired head coach Ron Rivera on Monday after completing a 4-13 season. Rivera wasn’t just the head coach for Washington — he also had final say on all football and front office decisions. Washington is looking to completely reshape its football leadership, and it should be an attractive destination with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and money flowing through the franchise from new owner Josh Harris (who also owns the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA).

“This does not mean Bob Myers is now running the Commanders,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport said. “As of right now, will be helping with the search. We’ll see if at some point down the line this becomes more. I guess anything is possible. As of right now, Myers is in an advsiory capacity.”

Myers released the following statement after his position with the Commanders:

Myers joined the Warriors in April of 2011 as assistant GM after the team had already drafted Stephen Curry. The team would draft Klay Thompson months later. Myers took over as the Warriors GM a year later, and pulled off a masterclass in his first draft, selecting Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green to complete the core of what would grow into a dynasty. Myers also helped acquire Andre Iguodala in July 2013. Iguodala was named NBA Finals MVP in 2015 as the Warriors won their first championship.

The end of Myers’ tenure in Golden State was a bit spottier. He selected James Wiseman with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, who is tracking to go down as one of the bigger draft busts in recent memory. Myers also drafted Jonathan Kuminga ahead of Franz Wagner in 2021.

The Commanders will have a heavy NBA presence as they look for a new head coach and front office:

No, this doesn’t mean Myers is jumping ship to football full-time. Still, nabbing Myers for an advisory committee is a high-profile move for the Commanders. Washington has plenty of work to do this offseason, starting with naming a new head coach and GM.
