Jordan Spieth had a disappointing showing at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and even had to cough up $20 thanks to a wayward drive.
Jordan Spieth has missed his fourth cut of the season at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson—the event in which he made his PGA Tour debut as a 16-year-old in 2010.
He had a chance to make the weekend at the end of his second round, as he arrived at the par-4 16th hole one shot off the cut-line at 5-under par for the tournament.
But he rifled his tee-shot way right on this 495-yard par-4. And then, somehow, his ball caromed back into the middle of the fairway.
His drive bounced off a patron’s elbow, setting himself up for a much easier second shot into this challenging hole.
But Spieth could not take advantage of the fortuitous bounce. He pulled his approach to the left side of the green and three-putted from there, dropping down to 4-under and two off the cut line.
A shot was not the only thing Spieth lost on the 16th hole on Friday, however. He also lost $20, handing the unlucky fan a $20 bill for his ill-advised drive. Spieth also gifted him a signed golf ball.
That fan presumably went to pick up a beverage, courtesy of Spieth.
Yet, Spieth could not garner any momentum over his last two holes at TPC Craig Ranch, finishing par-par to shoot a 1-under 70 on day two. He did not have his best stuff this week and will look to rebound at next week’s Wells Fargo Championship—a Signature Event at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After that, it’s on to the PGA Championship, where Spieth will look to complete the career Grand Slam. Hopefully, he will not slam another drive into another fan in the coming weeks.
