Speaking at the Spanish Grand Prix Haas driver Kevin Magnussen identified Carlos Sainz Jr. as the main holdup regarding the 2025 driver transfer market
The Formula 1 world is in Barcelona for this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, and there are many storylines worth tracking. One of the major themes is the battle shaping up in both the Constructors’ Championship as well as the Drivers’ Championship, as McLaren and Ferrari — and their drivers — seem to be taking the fight to Red Bull and Max Verstappen, respectively.
However, the major storyline remains the 2025 driver grid.
During the FIA Press Conference on Thursday one of the drivers still awaiting word on his fate, Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, identified what the believes to be the major holdup when it comes to setting the grid for 2025.
Carlos Sainz Jr.
Magnussen asked what’s the hold up on his future, gestures toward Sainz: “He is, Carlos is the cork in the bottle. A lot of guys are waiting for him to make a move. Eventually, all the other pieces of the puzzle will fall. Yeah, that’s the truth of that.” #F1 #SpanishGP

There is certainly some truth to this notion. As outlined by both Toto Wolff and James Vowles in recent weeks, Sainz is the top free agent driver on the market. And with Wolff indicating that Mercedes is going to go in a different direction for next season — in all likelihood young phenom Andrea Kimi Antonelli — then Sainz will be looking at his other options.
And taking his time to ensure he makes the right decision.
That means the other drivers are in a bit of a holding pattern. Let’s say, for example, Sainz decides to sign with Williams for next season, as has been the assumption recently. That means both Sauber and Haas are now out of the running for his services, and they can move down their list of potential drivers to their next options. For Magnussen in particular, that might mean he returns to Haas, perhaps as a veteran to pair with another young driver, Oliver Bearman.
And to continue with that example, Sauber would then know those options are off the table, and they can pivot to perhaps Esteban Ocon or one of their two current drivers (Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu) to pair with Nico Hülkenberg next season.
Once Sainz makes up his mind, the rest of the dominoes will fall.
Or the cork will come out of the bottle, to use Magnussen’s description.
