The NBA Rising Stars challenge has taken on different looks over recent years. From a USA vs. World format to the current four-team round robin form, the NBA has tinkered with the Rising Stars game year over year. However, what doesn’t change is the fact that the NBA is laden with young stars, ready to showcase their skills in the spotlight.
This year, the winning team in the Rising Stars Challenge will join the NBA All-Star Game as part of the four-team tournament debuting this year. This game is always a big opportunity for younger players to make a name for themselves, and that’s truer than ever this year.
Here is this year’s Rising Stars’ roster.
Team M
Team M is coached by Mitch Richmond. Richmond averaged 21 points per game and spent his first three years in the league with the Golden State Warriors, where he became a star and won Rookie of the Year in 1988.
If you’re sensing a trend here, you’re correct: Team C is coached by Chris Mullin, rounding out Run TMC, the trio of Richmond, Mullin and Hardaway. Mullin spent the longest time in the Bay Area of the three, averaging 20.1 points over 13 seasons with the Warriors.
Dalton Knecht, G, Los Angeles Lakers/Charlotte Hornets/Los Angeles Lakers
Jaylen Wells, F, Memphis Grizzlies
Team G-League
The name is sort of self-explanatory. This team is a roster of G-League stars who have played well for their respective teams. To me, this is a pretty cool opportunity to prove yourself against some of the more prominent young guys in the league. Who knows, some of these dudes could parlay this into some main roster minutes. The team is coached by Jeremy Lin, who captivated the world with the New York Knicks. Lin was originally on the Golden State Warriors when he entered the league in 2010.
For each semifinal game, the winner will be the first team to reach or surpass 40 points. For the championship game, the winner will be the first team to reach or surpass 25 points.
Game 1: Team C vs. Team T
Game 2: Team G League vs. Team M
Game 3: Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2
