Mystik Dan’s bid for the Triple Crown was denied at the Preakness
Mystik Dan came into the Preakness Stakes as the favorite.
But Saturday was Seize The Grey’s day.
Mystik Dan, the Kentucky Derby winner, came out fairly well, but Seize The Grey took an early lead along with Imagination. Seize The Grey maintained the lead at the half-mile marker, again followed by Imagination and Mystik Dan.
But as the field turned from home Mystik Dan made a move, looking to chase down Seize The Grey. But it was not enough, as Seize The Grey carried the day.
Mystik Dan went off as the favorite, with the Kentucky Derby winner’s odds going from 5/2 to 3-1 in the hours ahead of the Preakness Stakes, before going back to 5/2. Catching Freedom was listed at 7/2 ahead of post time, while Tuscan Gold and Imagination were both listed at 4-1.
Seize The Grey was listed at 8-1.
With rain working through Maryland Friday night into Saturday, it made for a muddy track at the Preakness, the first time in over 80 years the field faced a muddy track at the event.
It made D. Wayne Lukas, at 88 years old, the oldest trainer to win a Triple Crown race. Jaime Torres, making his Triple Crown debut, rode Seize the Grey to victory.

Preakness 2024 purse
The official payout for the 2024 Preakness has not been revealed, but what is known is that the total purse has increased to $2 million for 2024, a 33-percent increase from the $1.5 million purse last year.
Given that the winner typically takes 60 percent of the total purse, here are the expected payouts for the 2024 Preakness:

2nd place: $400,000
3rd place: $220,000
4th place: $120,000
5th place: $60,000
What is next in horse racing’s Triple Crown?
The third and final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes. This year’s Belmont Stakes is set for Saturday, June 8, and will be the 156th running of the event.
However, it will look a little different this year.
Instead of taking place at historic Belmont Park, this year’s Belmont Stakes will be run at Saratoga Race Course, as Belmont Park is undergoing renovations.
