Genesis Scottish Open Preview:
For the first time since his U.S. Open heartbreak, Rory McIlroy will tee it up in a PGA Tour event. The defending Scottish Open champion took three weeks off after his runner-up finish at Pinehurst No. 2, but he returns to this week’s tournament as the favorite. McIlroy headlines six of the top 10 players in the world who are in the field.
The four-time major winner birdied the final two holes last year to edge out Robert MacIntyre and win for the first time in 2023. He comes into this year’s event with two victories: The Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship.
However, no golfer has ever won back-to-back Genesis Scottish Opens. Could McIlroy become the first? He loves national opens and plays well in them. McIlroy has won seven different national opens so far in his career. Could this week be number eight—meaning he plays well and goes into The Open with a ton of confidence? Perhaps.
Meanwhile, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler did not make the trip. He might have wanted to get an early look at Royal Troon for the Open Championship as he aims to win his sixth event and second major of 2024.
Joining McIlroy in this star-studded event are Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, and Ludvig Åberg.
Davis Thompson, who demolished the field last week at the John Deere Classic, made the trek from Silvis, Illinois, to Scotland—along with 34 other players, including Eric Cole and Denny McCarthy.
Like McIlroy, Viktor Hovland will return after a short break. He tied for 20th at the Travelers Championship in his last start. Rumors suggest that the former Oklahoma State golfer has been in Las Vegas with his swing coach, Joe Mayo. Maybe his hiatus will allow him to capitalize this week and notch his first win this season.
Min Woo Lee is another player to watch out for in Scotland. The 2021 winner knows what it takes to win at this course, so do not count him out. He has plenty of momentum coming into this week, so it could finally be his time to win on the PGA Tour.
Any of these guys could make a run for it at The Renaissance Club. After the last few weeks of birdie fests, this links-style track should give the elite group of players in the field more of a challenge, but as the old saying goes in Scotland, it’s all about the weather and the prevailing wind.
