Controversial Commissioner Greg Norman has disclosed what his future with LIV Golf will look like.
A few months ago, Sports Business Journal reported that LIV Golf would move on from embattled commissioner Greg Norman and replace him with a seasoned sports administrator.
“Once my official tenure at LIV is up, which is August 31st of this year, I will stay involved with LIV in some way, shape, or form,” Norman said.
“I’m going to stay on the board. So there will be that part of my life, but it won’t be as consuming as what it was before.”
Norman has been quite visible at LIV events in recent years, often stirring controversy at the same time. The 2-time major winner has become a polarizing figure, as many have championed his cause while many, such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, have disparaged him for his efforts.
“When I look back on my past three-and-a-half years, from my past 20 years, oh my gosh, I really have changed the game of golf more than what people realize,” Norman added.
LIV launched in the spring of 2022, a week before Matt Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Open at Brookline. Norman came on board roughly eight months before, planning the league’s launch while alluring players to join the start-up circuit. Since then, LIV has grown exponentially and stages events all over the world. They even struck a television deal with FOX Sports in the United States, a seismic move that should help LIV’s abysmal television ratings.
As for what Norman plans to do outside of LIV, he hopes to continue to design golf courses. His most notable designs include Medalist Golf Club, Tiburon Golf Club, and TPC San Antonio. Norman has constructed courses all over the world, from the U.S. to Australia and everywhere in between. He even has courses in Thailand and Vietnam, a part of the world that has staged LIV events.
“I’d like to double the portfolio of golf courses I’ve opened. I’ve done 124 now. I’d love to have 250 done in the next whatever number of years,” Norman said.
“So, no retirement. Slow down, yes. But no retirement.”
