This game was anything but corny.
MLB’s Field of Dreams Game took a long time to reach fruition. For one thing, people needed to sit with the film Field of Dreams long enough to decide that it was worth basing a whole real-life sporting event on a movie. And even when MLB made the call to host that game in 2020 … COVID had other ideas.
Finally, in 2021, we find ourselves in the ninth inning of the Field of Dreams game … and it’s a pretty spectacular moment. Yankees vs. White Sox, Chicago’s Tim Anderson at-bat with a chance to end the game on a walk-off.
There’s a lot to unpack in the above statements: You should know about the movie, the event, the venue, and the numerous obstacles and delays. You should know about that corn in the outfield and the absolute barrage of homers that have disappeared into the stalks. And you should know about Anderson, the White Sox star who makes big plays, speaks his mind, and demands the spotlight on issues that MLB might rather push aside. Before we see what he can do, we should rewind.
