Notre Dame backup QB Steve Angeli finished the first half in place of starter Riley Leonard

Notre Dame trails Penn State 10-3 at halftime of the Orange Bowl, with a spot in the National Championship Game against the winner of tomorrow night’s Texas-Ohio State game on the line.

Game update: Leonard returned to the field to begin the second half. But Notre Dame was hit with a Delay of Game penalty on that first snap.

But the Fighting Irish might be without starting quarterback Riley Leonard for the rest of the game.

Leonard was shaken up on this hit shortly before halftime, and was taken to the medical tent for an evaluation:

Leonard was replaced by backup quarterback Steve Angeli, who completed 6-of-7 passes for 44 yards on the possession. But Angeli took a sack with Notre Dame facing 1st and 10 on the Penn State 15-yard line, with seconds remaining in the half, forcing Notre Dame to settle for a field goal.

Angeli completed 18-of-28 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns in limited action this season. He started Notre Dame’s bowl game at the end of last season, throwing for 232 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-8 win over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl.
