Broncos head coach Sean Payton might have seen his rookie QB at 31 Flavors last night
If you spend enough time around the NFL and NFL media, you get used to comparisons. Draft prospects are compared to current, or even legendary, players. Coaches are compared to other coaches. Sometimes the comparisons go beyond the NFL world and bleed into other sports, such as when Tom Brady made a Steph Curry comparison for Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, or they go beyond the NFL itself.
However, on Sunday Denver Broncos head coach dropped a new one for rookie quarterback Bo Nix.
Ferris Bueller.
The Broncos defeated the Las Vegas Raiders by a final score of 34-18, snapping an eight-game losing streak to their AFC West rivals. Nix enjoyed perhaps his breakout game in the NFL, throwing a pair of touchdowns after entering play Sunday with just one in his first four games.
But a moment late in the game caught everyone’s attention. After the Broncos punted late in the third quarter, when Nix threw a deep shot to Troy Franklin that the receiver dropped in the end zone, the FOX Sports cameras caught Nix and Payton in a heated exchange:
After the win, Payton was asked about that moment when he made the comparison to Ferris Bueller from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off:
“There’s still a little bit of Ferris Bueller in this player that we gotta get rid of,” said Payton. “Talking about Bo, and I love him to death.”
Payton continued:
“Ferris was kind of quirky, doing his own thing once in a while,” continued Payton. “He’s still got a little Ferris Bueller in him.”
Now we are waiting for the Cameron Frye reference from Payton.
