2006 U.S. Open champion being considered by NBC Sports as Paul Azinger’s replacement

Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, could be the new lead analyst for NBC Sports’ golf telecasts.

NBC Sports is eyeing Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, to replace Paul Azinger on its telecasts in 2024.

NBC and Azinger could not agree on a contract this past Fall, thus leading to his ouster and opening the door for Ogilvy, according to Sports Business Journal.

Ogilvy has gained notoriety as of late, mainly for his contributions to the Fire Pit Collective, where renowned Author Alan Shipnuck is a partner. The Australian also has superior knowledge of golf architecture and has established relationships with many PGA Tour pros, thanks to his lengthy career.

Sports Business Journal also noted that Ogilvy could be one of multiple analysts for NBC.

At the Hero World Challenge, Curt Byrum and Paul McGinley auditioned for the role, sitting alongside host Dan Hicks as the lead analysts for Tiger Woods’ event.

Whether either one of those two will join Ogilvy remains to be seen.

NBC’s first event of 2024 will be at The Sentry in Maui, the first Signature Event of the 2024 season. Jon Rahm won the event last year but will not be there this year since he joined LIV Golf.

But Ogilvy could be there instead, not as a player, but perhaps as an announcer. And his point of view would be quite resourceful for a predominately American audience.
