The second Signature Event of 2025 kicks off with many of the game’s biggest stars. Here are the odds and our picks.
Something feels different about the PGA Tour this week, and that’s because Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy — two players ranked among the top three in the world — are making their season debuts at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the second Signature Event of the season.
Jordan Spieth returns to action, too, his first time doing so since he had surgery on his wrist last August. The three-time major winner last played at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where he labored to a T-68 finish.
Other notables at Pebble Beach this week include Ludvig Åberg, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas, but Xander Schauffele remains sidelined due to a rib injury. Gabby Herzig of The Athletic reported that Schauffele tweaked his right side during a workout toward the end of 2024, and he tried to play through the pain at The Sentry. But it has continued to bother him since the season-opener in Maui, which explains why he has needed time to recuperate over the past few weeks. Luckily, doctors have cleared Schauffele to practice once more — perhaps signaling a return sooner rather than later.

Playing Through’s Picks:
Jack Milko — Staff Writer, Golf
Pebble Beach is not only one of the shorter courses on tour, but it also has the smallest greens, which places a hefty premium on ball striking. Therefore, putting is the key to success because players must take advantage of the opportunities they give themselves. Look no further than what Wyndham Clark did during last year’s final round, as he made 189 feet worth of putts to set the Pebble Beach course record with a phenomenal 11-under 60. Sure, inclement weather shortened the tournament to 54 holes, but Clark’s putter proved to be the difference.
And that helps explain why I am going with the best putter in the world to win for the first time this week. Denny McCarthy, who has finished among the top four in strokes gained putting in each of the past three seasons, will finally break through at Pebble Beach — a course that suits his game perfectly.
McCarthy is by no means a long hitter, averaging a mere 292.9 yards off the tee so far in 2025. However, he hit the green in regulation 77% of the time during his first two starts at The Sentry and the Sony Open in Hawaii, tying for 46th and 16th in those events, respectively. But now that he has had a few weeks off, McCarthy arrives in the Monterrey Peninsula refreshed and ready to go. Plus, the former Virginia Cavalier has had success at Pebble Beach before, posting a T-12 in 2022, a T-4 in 2023, and a T-26 a year ago. He’s the perfect longshot for this week.
FanDuel Odds: McCarthy to win at +10000

Forgive me for being incredibly chalk in what feels like the first legitimate event of the 2025 PGA Tour season, but I am going to go with Scottie Scheffler here.
Is Scottie coming back from an injury that would theoretically impact his ability to play golf? Yes.
But is Scottie also Scottie and, therefore, an auto lock in most instances, especially when counted out? The answer is a big yes.
These days, I am more confident than ever that Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Mahomes will win anything they play in. They are both about to have a couple of good weeks.
FanDuel Odds: Scheffler to win at +450
Mark Schofield — Staff Writer, NFL and Formula 1
For some strange reason, the powers that be decided to let the NFL writer turned F1 writer make some golf picks. So this should go over very well…
But before we get too crazy, we can come out of the gate with a somewhat chalky pick. Given the adage of Pebble Beach being a “ball striker’s paradise,” Collin Morikawa seems like a safe play. He’s coming off a solid showing at The Sentry, where he finished solo second, hitting 91.7% of greens in regulation and only notching a pair of bogeys over his four rounds, both of which came at the tricky Par-4 sixth, where the crosswinds came into play. He only tied for 14th at Pebble Beach a year ago, but that came during his rocky start to 2024. With his game in form heading into this week, I think he’s a good bet.
FanDuel odds: Morikawa to win at +1400

When I was growing up, my home course was a public spot called Fairway Hills. This is not meant to slander the fine folks at Fairway Hills but to give you a sense of how much care went into this 6,000-yard 18-holer; I was part of the grounds crew as a high schooler, a freedom that led 16-year-old me to be quite irresponsible. I would choose pin placements every day, which, of course, I abused and put some holes in the middle of slopes on the greens. And one time, I put diesel fuel in an unleaded mower.
This is all to say that Pebble Beach is Maverick McNealy’s home course. It is a huge deal for Mav to play at Pebble in this event, and not an insignificant advantage knowing the course as well as he does. Part of me is simply rooting for McNealy to do well because of how good of a story that would be. But there is a window of possibility with the Stanford grad, given that he won the RSM Classic a little over two months ago.
FanDuel Odds: McNealy to win at +5000
