Dave and Buster’s is going to let you start gambling on arcade games

Published on

This will definitely end well and be fine.

In a move that surely won’t result in someone taking a Skee-Ball to the face, Dave and Buster’s announced Tuesday that patrons will soon be able to gamble on arcade games.

Lucra, the company behind the betting technology is very careful not to use the term “gambling” or “betting,” instead referring to them as “challenges” or “real-money contests” — but if is walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck. It will allow for customers to set up head-to-head bets on things like Skee-Ball, pop-a-shot, and other similar skill-based games. It’s unclear at this time how deep the gambling technology will be implemented, or if this is something that can apply to every competitive game at Dave and Buster’s.

Wagering on games will only be allowed for those who are 18 or older, and is expected to be rolled out soon. Let’s be real: Friendly bets on stuff like this have been around forever, but never codified in such a way, with language that comes straight out of a Silicon Valley nightmare handbook.

“Whether you’re playing pickleball with your friends or playing golf on the weekend, we help to amplify that and digitize that experience with our partners,” said Robbins.

Time will tell how all this pans out. If there’s one thing we know for sure it’s that nothing ever goes wrong when combining alcohol and gambling.
