Francisco Alvarez takes a tipped ball right to the beans in spring training

BASEBALL IS BACK!

Spring training is a time to iron out things for MLB teams, and in the case of Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez: Perhaps time to think about ordering a new cup.

The Mets and Red Sox faced off in Spring Training on Monday afternoon and Paul Blackburn was developing his rapport with Alvarez when a pitch got tipped by Alex Bregman and rocketed right into the catcher’s bean bag.

It’s always amazing to see how announce teams react to moments like this. They have to acknowledge what happened for the audience, but also remain professional. It’s a real tightrope when it comes to just witnessing someone double over after being hit in the nuts.

“Man, that can’t feel good.”

“I gotta believe these catchers kinda like Spring Training. You know football players always talk about training and how they wanna get hit a few times to get numb. These catchers gotta feel the same. Foul tips, hands, legs — you name it.”

“You think they want to get a couple out of the way early?!

“I dunno.”

Call it a hunch, but I don’t think catchers want to get “a few out of the way” when it comes to getting drilled in the nuts.
