Team Europe has named Luke Donald the 2025 Ryder Cup Captain, looking to win on U.S. soil for the first time since 2012.
One of the two captains for the 2025 Ryder Cup has been officially announced.
Luke Donald earned two more years as head of Team Europe after leading the team to a 16.5-11.5 win at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy, earlier this year.
“Two more years, anyone? It’s going to be an honor to lead this amazing team once again in New York,” he wrote on his Twitter.
Donald proved himself worthy of the captaincy after being the second choice for Team Europe in 2023. He replaced Henrik Stenson, who lost his job in July 2022 after he joined LIV Golf.
The Englishman becomes the first repeat captain since Bernard Gallacher did so for three matches from 1991 to 1995.
Donald is trying to become only the second European captain to lead his team to both home and away victories. Tony Jacklin was the only one to do so in 1985 and 1987.
Team USA has yet to announce its captain for 2025, but Zach Johnson is not expected to be that guy.
Ahead of the Hero World Challenge, Tiger Woods shot down the speculation that he could be the one who leads the Americans at Bethpage Black. He is far more frustrated about the June 6th deal with PIF and the PGA Tour.
“There’s too much at stake with our tour to think about a Ryder Cup right now,” Woods said. “We have to get this done, and we have to be focused on this,” Woods said Tuesday.
Donald and Team Europe will have their work cut out for them, as the Americans tend to play better on home soil. Team USA has won eight of the last nine Ryder Cups in the States. The lone exception was the 2012 “Miracle at Medinah.”
Team Europe overcame a four-point deficit on Sunday to come out on top 14.5-13.5. The 2025 captain was a player on that team, going 2-2-0 that week, including winning a point on Sunday to help lead the comeback.
