Game times for the Wild Card Series are set
Major League Baseball’s postseason will get underway on Tuesday, October 1 with the start of the Wild Card Series. The field for the American League is set, but the National League will need one additional day to round things out with three teams vying for two remaining spots.
The Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks enter Monday technically alive. Atlanta and New York are tied for the fifth Wild Card spot while Arizona is just percentage points behind.
The Braves and Mets were originally scheduled to play a three-game series at Truist Park on September 24-26. The Braves won the opener 5-1, but the final two games of the series were postponed due to Hurricane Helene. Atlanta could have clinched a spot in the postseason Sunday, but lost to the Kansas City Royals.
A win by either the Braves or the Mets in Monday doubleheader will punch their ticket to the postseason. The Diamondbacks need either Atlanta or New York to sweep Monday’s twin bill in order to earn the final playoff spot.
The rest of the National League picture is in place with the Los Angeles Dodgers claiming the No. 1 overall seed throughout the postseason. The Philadelphia Phillies ended the Braves’ six-season run as NL East champs. The Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres will host the Braves, Mets or Diamondbacks starting Tuesday.
The New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians earned first round byes as the top two seeds in the American League. The Wild Card series will feature the Houston Astros hosting the Detroit Tigers and the Baltimore Orioles facing the Kansas City Royals.
