Austrian Sepp Straka held on to his 54-hole lead to win The American Express in California. Here are the full results and payouts.

Sepp Straka entered the final round of The American Express holding a three-shot advantage. Having won two PGA Tour events before, the former Ryder Cup star has experience getting the job done — except he had never held a 54-hole lead on tour before this week.

That did not matter.

Straka coasted to victory, posting a 2-under 70 during his final round to eclipse Justin Thomas by a pair. Straka also made only two bogies all week, both of them coming over the final three holes when the tournament was all but over.

“It was a fun day, trying to manage the lead and manage my nerves,” Straka said.

“Yeah, just had a good time playing out there, and, yeah, very happy to come out with a win.”

Pete Dye’s Stadium Course at PGA West tricks even the best players in the world, as a double-bogey is always just one bad swing away. But Straka did an excellent job of keeping the ball in play and not giving into Dye’s tricks and twists.

“There’s no safe play, really, you just have to hit your numbers, you have to hit your spots, especially as firm as the greens are, you just have to execute, kind of made it easy to focus on each shot,” Straka added.

“But it was very intimidating, obviously, because every hole you know, you got a chance to make a double, a bogey, everywhere you look. So, yeah, I’m very happy with how I hit the ball today, and I’m just overall very happy with the week.”
