The Chiefs’ drops killed comeback vs. Eagles despite perfect Patrick Mahomes passes

Patrick Mahomes was failed by his receivers again with 2 devastating clutch drops in Eagles rematch.

Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in football, but his wide receivers haven’t done him any favors during the 2023 season. As former KC star Tyreek Hill rewrites the NFL record books in Miami this season, the Chiefs haven’t had a reliable pass catcher for Mahomes outside of Travis Kelce all year. Kansas City wide outs have been letting down their superstar QB, and never was it more apparent than during a Super Bowl LVII rematch on Monday Night Football.

The Philadelphia Eagles beat Kansas City, 21-17, to cap Week 11 in a game that lived up to the hype. The Chiefs didn’t score in the second half, continuing a troubling trend all season. Mahomes put his team in position to win at the end of the game, but his receivers just couldn’t make a play for him.

The Eagles deployed their signature Tush Push to score the go-ahead touchdown with just over six minutes left. The Chiefs offense had more two chances to respond, but their final drive was defined by a pair of killer drops that ended their comeback attempt on a sad note.

With under two minutes left, Mahomes unleashed a bomb to Marquez Valdes-Scantling that should have been a touchdown … but MVS dropped it. This is a heartbreaking drop:

The Chiefs still had one more chance. Facing a 4th-and-25, Mahomes ripped another laser to wide receiver Justin Watson.

The pass hit him in the hands, but Watson dropped it. Game over:

The Chiefs led the league in drops entering the game with 26 on the year. They dropped a few more against the Eagles, including a couple on the final drive that cost them the game.

Valdes-Scantling slammed his helmet out of frustration after the game:

The lack of talent in the receiver room has been a huge problem all season. With so many drops in big situations throughout the year, it’s going to continue to be a major storyline in the playoffs.

Mahomes can’t do it all himself. He’s throwing some incredible passes that his teammates just can’t catch. Kansas City just has to hope their receivers are getting the drops out now before the games really count in the playoffs.
